Adam - The First Breath

The story of where every single one of us comes from: the first human, the first prophet, the first sin, the first repentance, and the first grave.

Adam The First Breath

Every one of us started here. Not from light. Not from fire.

Allah shaped the first man out of clay,

the same ground people would walk on, fight over, and get buried in for the rest of time.

Allah made him with His two hands.

Then Allah breathed into him, and the clay stood up.

The first human. And the first prophet.

Allah had already told the angels what was coming. And the angels had a question.

Will You place upon it

one who causes corruption therein

and sheds blood,

while we exalt You with praise

and declare Your perfection?

They weren't arguing. It was just all they knew about us. And they weren't wrong.

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى جَاعِلٌ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً ۖ قَالُوٓا۟ أَتَجْعَلُ فِيهَا مَن يُفْسِدُ فِيهَا وَيَسْفِكُ ٱلدِّمَآءَ وَنَحْنُ نُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِكَ وَنُقَدِّسُ لَكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we exalt You with praise and declare Your perfection?" He [Allāh] said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."

Saheeh International

So Allah taught Adam the names. All of them.

Every creature, every thing, and what to call it.

Exalted are You;

we have no knowledge

except what You have taught us.

Indeed, it is You

who is the Knowing, the Wise.

Peace be upon you.

Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah.

Then came the order to bow to him. Every angel bowed. One didn't.

His name was Iblis. And he wasn't an angel.

He was a jinn, standing right there with them. And he was asked why.

I'm better than him.

You made me from fire, and him from clay.

قَالَ فَٱهْبِطْ مِنْهَا فَمَا يَكُونُ لَكَ أَن تَتَكَبَّرَ فِيهَا فَٱخْرُجْ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰغِرِينَ

[Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise], for it is not for you to be arrogant therein. So get out; indeed, you are of the debased."

Qur'an 7:13

Saheeh International

Since You've led me astray,

I'll lie in wait for them

on Your straight path.

Then I'll come to them

from the front and from behind,

from their right and from their left.

And You won't find most of them grateful.

That promise never expired. We're living inside it right now.

Allah gave Adam and Hawwa a garden to live in. With one rule.

And one enemy who'd already said exactly what he was going to do.

Adam,

want me to show you

the tree of living forever

and a kingdom that never fades?

He never said disobey. He said it was for their own good.

Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves,

and if You do not forgive us

and have mercy upon us,

we will surely be among the losers.

They didn't blame him. They took it on themselves.

فَتَلَقَّىٰٓ ءَادَمُ مِن رَّبِّهِۦ كَلِمَـٰتٍ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.

Qur'an 2:37

Saheeh International

Allah forgave them, and sent them down to live here.

Down here, they had children.

Two of them each brought an offering. The old accounts call them Qabil and Habil. The Qur'an doesn't give their names.

I'm going to kill you.

Indeed, Allāh only accepts

from the righteous

One was accepted. The other wasn't.

And the reason is right there in what his brother just said.

His answer was one sentence. The whole story turns on it.

If you lift a hand

to kill me,

I won't lift my own hand

against you to kill you.

Indeed, I fear Allāh, Lord of the worlds.

He didn't fight back. Not because he couldn't. Because he wouldn't.

FLAP FLAP

So the first person ever to die didn't die of old age. His own brother killed him.

And every unjust killing since then puts a share on the brother who killed him, too.

The killer stood over his brother's body with no idea what to do next,

because nobody had ever had to know before.

This is my ruin!

Couldn't I even be like this crow

and cover my brother's body?

His father grieved hard for the son he'd lost.

Everything that's ever happened between people started right here, in this one family.

The mercy and the murder. Same generation. Same two parents.

Adam was forgiven, and Adam grieved. We inherited both.

We're still his children. And we're still choosing which son to be.
